This essay addresses competence orientation in religious education. Based on the observation that competence orientation has not yet been fully implemented in practice, the essay identifies three possible reasons for this: namely, misunderstandings in the discourse about competence orientation, dominance of the demand situations in class, and the ambivalent nature of the relationship between Christian faith and competence. The critical evaluation shows the benefits of competence orientation as well as the limits within which competence orientation has to be implemented if it is to be realised without abandoning established objectives of present religious education.
