After the seizure of power by the National Socialists, the school system very gradually proved to be a source of controversy. The Confessing Church adhered to the model of denominational rather than mixed-denominational schools. At the same time the idea of an independent religious instruction by the churches emerged, and this was adopted and implemented in the GDR after the war.
