In order to develop a concept of religious education from a Protestant point of view, reference to the theologian Friedrich Schleiermacher is unavoidable. By recognizing the need for a genuinely theological and autonomous religious pedagogy, Daniel Tobias Bauer reconstructs the theological roots of Schleiermacher's understanding of education, pointing out the importance of Christology for his concept of religious education.

By recognizing the need for a genuinely theological and autonomous religious pedagogy, Daniel Tobias Bauer reconstructs the theological roots of Schleiermacher's understanding of education, pointing out the importance of Christology for his concept of religious education. Presupposing that the unity of Schleiermacher's philosophical and theological way of thinking is not indisputable, the author presents a two-stage concept of education on the basis of the theologian's writings which accepts the challenges of a modern theory of society, including pluralism and its non-religious, as well as different-religious potentials.
