The German Basic Law has been changed more than 50 times since it came into effect in 1949. It has thus proven to be a very flexible constitution and at the same time it has demonstrated that it is highly successful as far as its enforceability is concerned. In spite of this, it has maintained its essence even during fundamental changes such as German reunification and European integration.
