The theory of Christian spirit developed by Falk Wagner was an ambitious one. Matthias Schnurrenberger shows how the Austrian theologian wanted to do equal justice to both Christianity and the modern ideal of autonomy with his speculative theology. Wagner's thesis was that the Christian God is present in circumstances where there is a reciprocal recognition between the individual and society that leads to social freedom.
