This first part of the volume on Alsace contains the church ordinances of the imperial city of Strasbourg in the years between 1523 and 1617.
When the Reformation was established in a territory or an imperial city, the territorial lords and the municipal authorities were forced to issue new ordinances for numerous areas of church life in their communities. This first part of the volume devoted to Alsace contains the church ordinances of the imperial city of Strasbourg in the years between 1523 and 1617. Martin Bucer, Wolfgang Capito and Kaspar Hedio, all of them citizens of Strasbourg, were three eminent figures of the Reformation who had significant influence on the reorganization of the church not only in Germany, but also in other European countries. Strasbourg assumed a mediating position in the theological conflict between Lutherans and Zwinglians. Based on this position, the city issued its own confession, the Confessio Tetrapolitana, and in the first half of the 16th century developed its own church organization, which had a particularly large impact on Johannes Calvin and the reformed Reformed church.
