The interaction of all the individuals involved is the polycentric origin of all social order, thus of the economic order as well. In the essays contained in this volume, Eilert Herms uses this insight of Friedrich Hayek's to lay the foundation for a theory of ethical responsibility of all those involved in the economic order and its development and to make this foundation transparent. This responsibility can only be perceived against the backdrop of convictions which concern the lasting, transcendental conditions of being a human in the world and which are communicated in the philosophical and religious discourse among the generations.
