Every narrative text has a structure: it arranges the series of events it recounts in a particular configuration. To understand this structure is of fundamental importance for interpretation. This especially holds true for stories in the New Testament.
But with reference to which textual features, and by what techniques, can such texts plausibly be outlined? Comparing and evaluating currently reigning approaches,Florian Wilk develops, with reference to the Parable of the Lost Son, a method that gives weight to a story's theme and content as well as its narrative style and manner of expression. Five studies of a variety of texts, ranging in length from a single verse to an entire Gospel, demonstrate the effectiveness of the method and illustrate how one may use it to »follow the tracks« of the narrator. A set of guidelines for outlining New Testament stories rounds out the volume.
