The subject of this collection of essays is occidental mysticism in its changing dynamics from the 12th to the 16th century. This is described as a continuation of traditions and basic concepts and at the same time as a sequence of breaks and new configurations. The authors focus on the end of the Middle Ages, which is seen as an age of very vital mysticism, and on Martin Luther. Looking at the latter from various perspectives, the authors are of the opinion that the entire concept of Luther's reformational theology had a mystical character and that the genesis of this theology can be described as the development of a new form of mysticism.
