Summary

What rhetorical strategies with the goal of edification do theologians pursue in sermons? How are their theological concepts expressed in this aesthetic form, which is oriented towards the reality of people's lives? This volume is intended as a foundation for understanding the most important Protestant theologians since the Enlightenment.

Sermons of renowned theologians are analyzed under the premises of their systematic theological concepts for the first time. The genre of »sermon« as speech reaches its aim of individual or communal edification by using rhetorical strategies and aesthetic features. The researchers from various disciplines such as practical and systematic theology, historical science, and literary studies explore this interconnection in their articles and demonstrate the different facets and the development of the term »edification« in course of time.
