The impact which broad social theory actually has on legal scholarship and practice are of paradigmatic importance for interdisciplinary research. The merits of strong interaction and the limits imposed by the institutional autonomy of disciplines are scrutinized from a comparative legal and interdisciplinary perspective.
The interaction between legal scholarship, legal practice and social theory forms a crucial question of interdisciplinary research. The necessity and the limitations of such an interaction were the central subject of the 'foundations of law' panel's proceedings during the 2013 Marburg Congress of the German Association of Comparative Law. To begin with, the practice in the large centers of the USA, Europe and Japan was subjected to a legal comparative examination. In addition to that, exemplary cross-sections, or, accordingly, longitudinal intersections, were taken into consideration – for example, cartel law as an area where there are lively interdisciplinary approaches, or the historical development of financial market instruments. A general division then drew together conclusions from both a German and an international interdisciplinary perspective. This volume presents a comprehensive overview of the panel´s findings.
