In the Jewish religion, the law plays a decisive role in determining the relationship to God; it is a religion ruled by laws which apply to all areas of life. The law, on the other hand, is based - as religious law - on religious foundations. Justus von Daniels shows how religious law can be made productive within the context of comparative law. He focuses on studies in comparative law which include bioethics, legal pluralism and legal methodology. The author devises a theory of comparative law which gives an excellent basis for dealing carefully with Jewish law. The book thus contributes to the integration of religious law into jurisprudence and also shows that Jewish law, which is pluralistic and transnational, can even serve as a reference model for new legal challenges.
