Modern Christian social welfare work thrives on religious motivation and intuitions yet operates within a quite secular practice sector. The need for a theological understanding of diaconia which does not ignore the advantages of secular professionalism or smother welfare's burning religious incentive is thus called for. Tobias Braune-Krickau understands this realm of service as a genuine place of religious experience.
