Falk Wanger can be seen as one of the most important and at the same time most controversial systematic theologians in the second half of the 20th century. Up to now however his approach has not been studied to any great extent. Kathrin Mette deals with a significant part of this approach - the theory of religion in Wagner's early work. After reviewing previous research literature, she explores the motives for Wagner's basic conviction that modern theology has to begin with the category of religion. She traces the origins of Wagner's own transcendentalist concept of religion and then describes Wagner's critical examination of the possibility of a theology based purely on the theory of religion. A bibliography of all of Wagner's work, which (where possible) provides information on the original context of the individual works, completes the study.
