Summary
Stefan Jungblut studies the impact of technological progress and human capital accumulation on labour demand and structural unemployment. He examines the behaviour of aggregate as well as disaggregate labour markets and surveys major theoretical approaches to explain it. He discusses the impact of growth on labour demand. Two distinct models are developed, a model of endogenous growth and a long run model of job matching. In both models, technological progress and human capital accumulation are considered as the main factors of economic growth. Since human capital is likely to be complementary in the process of endogenous innovations, high innovation activities will reduce the demand for unskilled labour in favour of skilled workers. However, counteracting shifts in the structure of labour demand will generally not offset at the aggregate level.
