Summary
Martin Sallmann examines Zwingli's Commentarius in its historical context. He places the addressees and the author in their historical surroundings, deals with the special genre of the document and describes the reason for and the circumstances under which it was written. Sallmann also consults other texts by Zwingli as well as works written by other authors from antiquity, the Middle Ages and by contemporary writers where he deems necessary. In addition, the author traces the beginnings and the development of theology as shown in Zwingli's Commentarius. The results are reflected in a final chapter on the history of research. In this work, the author has made an important contribution towards exploring the special image of Zwingli's theology.
