The problems and demands in regard to the definition of Christology have intensified considerably in the modern era. The historical and epistemological criticism since the Enlightenment have done away with the traditional Christological dogma, the attempts to reconstruct a »life of Jesus« as a basis for Christology not only made it clear what the disparity was between the historical Jesus and the Christ in whom people believe; it also led to numerous very different images of Jesus. Eventually, the subject of Christology was also in dispute. This volume deals with the problems and demands with which Christology is confronted in the modern era and explores the perspectives for a constructive continuation of the Christological debate in the relationship between historical research and dogmatic reconstruction.
