Wirtschaftswissenschaftliches Seminar Ottobeuren

The Wirtschaftswissenschaftliche Seminar Ottobeuren (Ottobeuren Economics Seminar) was a three-day international conference held annually in September, which dealt with various economic issues. Over 40 years, a small circle of no more than 30 experts in one chosen field of research met in the Ottobeuren monastery for an intensive exchange of ideas on the subject concerned.
The experts discussed new theoretical approaches, presented new empirical findings and examined implications for economic policy. Thus the subject-specific cooperation between economists, inclined towards theory, empiricism and politics, was a distinguishing feature of this seminar. Its success depended on the establishment of animated discussions, the aim of which was a creative discourse and the »gradual formulation of thoughts while speaking« (Kleist).
The theme of the seminar, intended to be relevant and topical, as well as viable from a scholarly and politico-economic perspective, was established and structured about one year in advance by the academic director, if necessary with the assistance of an expert-colleague in the designated field. Scholars with expertise in this area were asked to present a paper or a supplementary paper. After the results of the discussion were incorporated, the articles underwent an internal referee procedure before Mohr Siebeck published them along with the corresponding supplementary papers in a conference volume.

This conference series has now been concluded and no other titles are to be published. Volumes 24 to 26, and 28 to 41 are still available for purchase.
