In the Old Testament, the city of Beth-el is mentioned in 71 different places, making it the second most important city in Old Testament traditions. In this study, Melanie Köhlmoos shows how these traditions were shaped. She focuses on the memories of Beth-el in prophecy, Kings and Genesis.
In the Old Testament, the city of Beth-el is mentioned in 71 different places, making it the second most important city in Old Testament traditions. In this study, Melanie Köhlmoos shows how these traditions were shaped. In order to do so, she focuses on the memories of Beth-el in prophecy, Kings and Genesis. Although the memories all have their origins in the crisis which occurred in the 8th century, the three memory complexes follow different paths before they unite to form a larger figure in the Hellenistic era, in which Jerusalem finally conquered Beth-el, relegating it to second place in Israel's history.
