Zion is a fundamental topos for the theology of the Psalms, which, unlike Jerusalem, equally fills and shatters the dimensions of space and time. On the horizontal axis, it proves to be the center of a sacred topography, and it provides Israel and the world with a sense of direction and a home. On the vertical axis, it is able to erase the distance between the earthly and the heavenly presence of God. Corinna Körting analyzes the so-called Zion psalms as well as the references to Zion in the Psalter, some of which seem to be unspectacular. She comes to the conclusion that it is not a complete system with its Old Testament history of tradition which had such a decisive influence on the Psalms and the Psalter but rather Zion as an oscillating center of the progressive development of theology.
