Christoph Markschies Admitted to the Order “Pour le mérite”
We are delighted that our long-standing author and series editor Prof. Dr. Dr. h. c. mult. Christoph Markschies has been admitted to the prestigious Order “Pour le mérite for Sciences and Arts”.
The ceremonial admission took place during the Order’s public session on May 31. Election to the Order is among the highest distinctions awarded to scholars and artists in Germany. Founded in 1842, the Order is today under the patronage of the Federal President.
In addition, Christoph Markschies was awarded the Grand Cross of Merit with Star of the Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany in recognition of his outstanding academic achievements.
Christoph Markschies has served as President of the Berlin-Brandenburg Academy of Sciences and Humanities since 2020 and as President of the Union of the German Academies of Sciences and Humanities since 2022. He is Professor of Ancient Christianity at Humboldt University of Berlin. He studied, received his doctorate, and completed his habilitation at, among other institutions, the universities of Marburg, Munich, and Tübingen.
His membership in numerous academies, international research fellowships, and prestigious awards – including the Leibniz Prize and several honorary doctorates – underscore his significant contributions to theology and the study of antiquity.
