Summary
The text analyses a series of recent monographs on the theory and history of tragedy. The first part deals primarily with ancient Greek tragedy, the second with modern tragedy in the European context from the 17th century - especially in France, but also in England and Spain - to the 18th century in the German classicism of Schiller and Goethe. The theoretical yield lies in the demonstration of an essential difference between ancient and modern tragedy. An excursus deals with Heidegger's philosophy of tragedy.
