In the building of churches, Protestantism is searching for a visible expression of Protestant identity. Using primarily German Lutheranism as an example, the author of this article shows how the search for a visible Protestant identity from the 17th to the beginning of the 20th century alternated between sacrality and the profanity of genuine forms of expression.
