Summary
Part III of this overview begins by concluding of by far the most comprehensive chapter, which contains publications on the history of preaching and homiletics (5.2). It reveals the continuous recurrence of homiletic problems throughout the centuries and shows, among other things, that the respect for Holy Scripture, which has been invoked in every era, has had very different consequences for the style and content of public church speech and has never proven to be the golden solution to the contemporary challenges of preaching. Further chapters explore publications in the context of worship and rites of passages (6.) and present writings with a focus on practical guidance and aids for sermon preparation (7). Finally, an overview of 45 sermon collections is provided (8.), some of which relate to a specific theme or genre (8.1), while others are based on the church year (8.2). Several volumes present the preaching activities of individual personalities (8.3). They offer a wealth of didactically relevant material for visualizing the connection between theory and practice, for the linguistic analysis of theological positions, and are also likely to find interested readers as devotional reading. The literature review culminates in a critical assessment (9.) that calls for greater coherence in homiletic reasoning and advocates for the consideration of various established perspectives on understanding and preparation of a sermon.
