Pastor Karl Steinbauer (1906–1988) was the most significant opponent of National Socialist church politics and the compromise-oriented stance of Landesbischof Hans Meiser in the Bavarian Lutheran church. The goal of this essay is to present the motivations and limits of his opposition, which led to several arrests and finally to imprisonment in the Sachsenhausen concentration camp.
