The article discusses those aspects in which Johannine theology transcends other early Christian theological concepts and achieves a kind of normativity for later reflections. This is shown for high and at the same time dialectical Christology, for the view of God as strongly linked to the historical Jesus and to love, the personal view of the Spirit and the »proto-Trinitarian« distinction between Father, Son and Spirit and, finally, the hermeneutics of post-Easter retrospective and remembrance.
