Summary

In its »Jones Day« ruling, the Court of Justice of the European Union repudiates the
requirement of territorial exclusivity in legal traineeships. By foregrounding the principle
of proportionality, the Court establishes that a categorical refusal to recognize
foreign training stages contravenes Union law. The judgment underscores that less
restrictive and more appropriate mechanisms exist to safeguard both the freedom
of movement for workers and the systematic objectives of a coherent European
framework for legal education.
