  Summary
The question as to why God allows so much suffering is as old as mankind itself and will continue to preoccupy us. All attempts to solve the problem of the apparent incompatibility of God's omnipotence, his kindness and the existence of evil by reinterpreting one of these three concepts in a purely theoretical manner have remained aporetic. A possibly more satisfactory »solution« to this problem, from an existential perspective at least, of why God does not prevent evil, seems to be possible in the context of Luther's concept of three lumina at the end of »De servo arbitrio«: faith, which is aware of God's seclusion, hope, which insists on God's saving intervention, and love, which is given unconditionally to those who are suffering.
