As a result of its experiences with centuries of denominational conflicts and problems of coexistence, the German law pertaining to the established churches created a system of equalization whose scope for freedom and differentiation meets the needs of a pluralistic society and which has not been surpassed by any system in another country. It guarantees its citizens and their religious communities complete religious freedom, the separation of church and state, the neutrality of the state and the influence of faith on culture and the social system. The law's uniform, general and secular legal framework protects, supports and restricts the diverging variety of religions in accordance with their religious self-conception without secularizing them, trying to make them all the same or eliminating them from public life.
