Summary
In its basic principles, German constitutional law on religion, based on freedom of religion and state neutrality, has proven its worth. However, changes are needed in some areas. Christian traditions, such as those found in the wording of the oath of office and in laws governing Sundays and public holidays, have lost their legitimacy. Constitutional amendments that take account of the increasing religious pluralization of society are also obvious in the areas of religious education in schools and state subsidies to religious communities.
