Summary
Scientific integrity should enable trust and is therefore inextricably linked to the function of science to create rationally verifiable, reliable knowledge about the world. Science with integrity is a self-commitment, i. e. it appeals to a professional ethos. At the same time, science is a social context for action, a setting of social practices that require mutual respect. Finally, academic freedom and academic responsibility refer to a normative system that binds integrity to rules. Rules such as those established by the German Research Foundation in the Code of Good Scientific Practice, which all research institutions have implemented as legally binding rules, also play a key role here.
