The assumption that the religious communication between individuals and the gods was authentic and binding was a widely shared perception from Cicero up to the laws in late antiquity. This caused considerable problems for the standardization of religious behavior. Against this backdrop it is significant that the polemics as well focused on certain areas which can best be described using the term of individual experience. It is here that divination - the access to divine knowledge or, in other words, divine revelation - was of particular importance. Great importance was also attached to the encounter with images of the gods, particularly in temples.
