Summary
Nobody denies that the theological discussion on the doctrine of the trinity underwent crucial changes in the 4th century, and that during this time at two church councils a form of this theology was standardized which had a formative influence on the Christian discourse about the triune God up to the present time. Christoph Markschies describes the previous history of the theology of the trinity standardized at the church council as well as its development in the 4th century. He examines current literature and makes suggestions as to what can be understood by 'Nicene' or 'neo-Nicene' theology of the trinity. Markschies places special importance on the reconstruction of the internal systematic logic of the historical process without however neglecting those non-theological factors such as political interests.
