Why do strategic groups exist? Up to now, this question had remained unanswered in the field of strategic management. Using two theoretical approaches, the neoclassical spatial competition approach and the market process theory, the author deals with this question, analyzing the reasons for grouping processes on the supplier side. An empirical test of his hypotheses gives the first corroboration of his theoretical work.
