Thanks partly to the church's endorsement of it, Germany's post-1949 new Basic Law was rapidly accepted. Thereafter, the protestant church in the country's west theologically appropriated parliamentary democracy for itself. In 1985, the church documented its declared relationship to the liberal-democratic constitution in a memorandum that is still much noted today. Just over 30 years following its publication, the present volume examines the origins and reception history of the memorandum.
