The critical essays on the history of philosophy and on contemporary philosophy reprinted in this volume, which were written and published over the course of many years, focus on the two central problems indicated by the terms »subject matter« and »theoretical status,« which appear in the volume's title. The essays reveal the background, in the history of philosophy, of the structural-systematic conception of philosophy Lorenz B. Puntel presents in his book Struktur und Sein.. Ein Theorierahmen für eine systematische Philosophie (Mohr Siebeck, 2006). In this previous work, the conception of philosophy envisaged in the essays and presented in the book has a unique but genuine theoretical status, one identifying its subject matter as the universal structures of the world or of actuality as a whole.
