Summary
The discussion on the regulatory challenges of the data economy is omnipresent. The book contributes to this discussion by providing a comprehensive in-depth analysis of the European Union's relevant legal framework in intellectual property (copyright, patents, protection of trade secrets according to the EU Trade Secrets Directive 2016), and protection of data privacy and security (General Data Protection Regulation 2016). Topical legislative developments, such as the recent EU Commission's proposals for a Digital Markets Act and a Digital Services Act are also covered. Against this background, the authors propose several targeted reforms for the future in order to effectively reconcile the paramount need for access to data with the regulatory environment in intellectual property and privacy protection under the guiding principle of private autonomy.
