Philipp Jakob Spener was the founder of the pietistic movement. His letters provide a very important source for the research of the early Modern Age, not only in the field of church history, but also in that of social history and the history of ideas. Volume IV of the »Dresdner Briefe« comprises 170 letters documenting the further development and spreading of the new piety movement as well as the upcoming opposition to it. During this time, Spener also prepared to relocate from Dresden to Berlin, a career move that can likewise be tracked through his copious correspondence.
