Summary
The letters of Philipp Jakob Spener (1635-1705), the founder of Pietism, are first-class sources for ecclesiastical and cultural history, offering as they do an insight into the development and the spread of the Pietist Movement. In addition, they possess unique informational value for many areas of spiritual and social life outside of the religious or church spheres. Since the handwritten material is scattered in archives and libraries all over the world, and the letters have come down to us partially in poor condition in old print, and for the most part without an addressee, there had been no access to these sources up to now.
