This volume contains the papers given at the 2nd Tübingen Conference on the Christian Orient in 2007, along with several articles which have been added. The articles cover the period between the 3rd and the 6th century AD. They deal with the Coptic book of Proverbs, the apocryphal gospels in Coptic and in particular the Gospel of Thomas as well as early monasticism in Egypt and its links to pagan literature.

They deal with the Coptic book of Proverbs, the apocryphal gospels in Coptic and in particular the Gospel of Thomas as well as early monasticism in Egypt and its links to pagan literature (the ancient history of the »the evil spirit at noon-day« and the Plotinian reminiscences in a work by Paul of Tamma). In addition they study the textual history of the life of Pachomius, the treatise of Didymus the Blind »On the Holy Spirit« and the »De sectis« by Abba Theodore and Christian-Egyptian iconography and iconology as exemplified by the Maiestas portrayals in the Coptic monasteries. Apart from this, the volume contains two Coptic text editions: two fragments by Shenute and Sahidic and Bohairic versions of the Testament of Isaac.
