Law enforcement authorities nowadays obtain significantly more informational material than they used to. However, the extent to which the defence can sift through it remains unclear. Saber Meglalu examines the increasingly frequent question of what investigation material actually counts as files and evidence under Section 147 of the German Code of Criminal Procedure (StPO) and how far the related inspection rights extend.
