Summary
The question of Paul and the law is the question of Paul and his interpreters. Has the law been abolished or fulfilled through what God has done in Christ? This new approach to understanding Paul on law focuses on the question of whether Paul is addressing his words to Jewish Christians or to Gentiles. Because 'works of law' had been markers of the righteous to separate them from Gentile sinners, Paul had to emphasize »justification by faith in Christ, not by works of law«. This is the foundation for his mission to the Gentiles: Gentile converts must not be circumcised, since Christ died for our sins. On the other hand Paul declares that only those who are in Christ will achieve true fulfillment of what the law requires.
