Summary
In his commentary on John, Hartwig Thyen refrains from dealing extensively with the genesis of the Gospel and its presumed sources. He interprets the Fourth Gospel as a highly poetic literary text, and examines the textual interplay with its three synoptic precursors. For Thyen, the Gospel of John is a text for all Christians or for everyone who is able to read, and not a work which addresses a specifically Johannine community which is isolated from the rest of the early church.
