Johannine scholarship of the last three to four decades has been shaped by far-reaching upheavals and new departures. Conventional scholarly positions that held for decades are being lastingly called into question: this concerns the sometimes excessive layer-models and source theories that sought to explain the origin of the Gospel of John. It concerns the supposed non-relationship of the Gospel of John to the Synoptic Gospels and the frequently assumed sociological, religio-historical, and/or theological special roles of the Gospel of John. This book on the Gospel of John shows the essential lines of development in recent Johannine scholarship and illustrates, by way of example and with new impulses for further work, the as-yet-untapped potential of these textual interpretations.
