Summary
Detlef Liebs examines why the early Christians had to suffer so much under Rome´s criminal law system and how they managed to turn this persecution into opportunities to witness and further their missionary activities. The author goes on to look at the legal implications of the Constantinian shift, how it entangled the authorities in quarrels of faith and led to further unrest among the Christians. However, the upheaval also helped enrich social life and saw legal practitioners, who had long remained heathen, converted with some of them even becoming saints.
