Only Matthew's Gospel refers back to the shedding of innocent blood repeatedly attested to in the Scriptures of Israel to interpret the death of Jesus. Johannes Vortisch shows that by using this motif the intertextual references suggest that the destruction of the Temple in 70 AD is understood as a punishment for the crucifixion of Jesus.
