Adolf von Harnack's university-wide lecture on the essence of Christianity was held in Berlin in the winter semester of 1899/1900. This work contains the text of the last edition in 1929 which Harnack himself oversaw as well as an appendix with significant, previously unnoticed texts associated with these lectures and some material from Harnack's unpublished works. The afterword describes the significance of this work within Harnack's entire works and explains its importance for current debates.
