Representative democracy is controversial. Among the crisis markers is de-parliamentarisation, a term conveying pro-parliamentary criticism as well as antiparliamentary resentment. The complex histories of (de-)parliamentarisation throughout the twentieth century reflect the struggle for parliamentary democracy that is time-bound, but not past.
