Summary
Thomas von Hippel examines the German banking ombudsman schemes, takes a look at what experiences the banks have had using them and looks into their legal status. In addition he describes various types of ombudsman schemes in the financial services in other countries, outlines the experiences these countries have had and on the basis of this he makes suggestions for the ideal ombudsman model which are of interest to other economic sectors apart from banking and insurance. In doing so, he makes an important contribution to potential improvements in consumer protection through selfregulation by trade and industry.
