Summary
The opinions on what constitutes good money vary, some experts claiming that good money is stable money, others saying that trying to maintain monetary stability causes stagnation and unemployment, and that the occasional devaluation makes money better. In his work, the author demonstrates that weak money has always been and still is a goldmine for weak governments who are not able to meet their financial requirements in a regular manner and who print money or mint coins in the quantities they need. He presents and analyzes three documents from 1530 and discusses the present European money debate to show that the nature and the relevance of this problem have not changed since the 16th century.
